Teaching Yoga to a Tween
Last night my brother and niece came over for Family Night. Armanni just turned 12 and she has been in my yoga classes over the years since she was about 1 & a half, but this was the first time I was actually teaching her proper form and postures, rather than the playful poses she is used to.
I laid out some yoga mats in my living room and began by creating a calm, relaxing environment with candles. Armanni is a very open and curious student, so when I showed her my yoga kit, she naturally wanted to try out the strap and blocks, even though we didn’t actually use them in my class.

After a long night of homework, she was really tired, so I decided to start with some basic Sun Salutations, a few standing poses and end with a relaxation. She was really receptive to learning the new postures and it gave me an opportunity to practice hands on adjustments so that she could be more at ease in the pose.
I see the gift of being able to do yoga with my niece right now in her life, not only because of all the pressures she is going through with school and growing up, but because it can offer her confidence, grace and ease during this awkward phase of becoming a teenager soon.
