Yoga Easter Egg Hunt
Spring is in the air and as Nature starts to show signs of new life, it is the perfect time for children to discover their connection to the natural world through yoga! Yoga allows kids to appreciate how things grow and the beauty all around them.
Instead of tossing those Easter baskets aside, why not use them to explore some fun Nature yoga and breathing exercises? You can recycle those plastic Easter Eggs and plan a yoga egg hunt indoors or outdoors that your kids will love! It makes a great rainy day activity too!

Fun Finger Puppets for Kids Yoga!
My favorite yoga props are these animal finger puppets.
When I first bought these adorable finger puppets, I never knew how much mileage I would get from them! I thought they would be a cute prompt for the kids to practice their animal poses. I purchased two sets of 10: farm animals and sea creatures! I have since expanded my puppet collection to include jungle animals, a butterfly and I’m always keeping my eye out for new puppet friends.
These puppets are popular with kids of all ages!
I keep all the finger puppets in a bag and whenever my students see the bag, they are a bundle of excitement! Each child reaches into the bag to pick a puppet and lead the class in doing the pose together. They enjoy making up poses too, like stretching their arms and neck up high and standing on their tip toes for giraffe and stomping like a bear. You can even have the children make up a yoga story using the puppets. Once upon a time, there was a LION and then the next child chooses their puppet and continues the story!
Puppets are a great way to keep children focused for relaxation time.
After we’ve finished with the poses, tell the children they are now going to give their puppets a ride with their breath during Savasana. I place the puppets gently on their bellies, as the children close their eyes. At the end of class, the children hold the puppet in their hands or put them on their finger during our closing song.
Finger puppet yoga is a sure-to-please lesson. I am sure your kids and students will love them as much as mine do!

Let’s Go on Yoga Camping Trip!!
After last week’s fun-filled Day at the Beach, I wanted to plan another memorable summer yoga adventure for my kids this week!
Inspired by some painted “story rocks” I saw on Pintrest, I decided to paint some of my own rocks! Made with a lot of LOVE, these camping-themed rocks provided some fun yoga prompts:

Yoga Games and an Update
It has been a while since I last posted about my kids’ yoga classes. Lots of changes in my business and news to report.
I am excited to announce that I have found an illustrator for my children’s book, which will be due out this Fall 2014. My dream of publishing a book that will touch the lives of children and families everywhere is becoming a reality and I can’t wait to step into this new role of published author/educator and share my book with children at schools, libraries, bookstores, etc!

I also took the Rainbow Kid’s Yoga Training a few weeks ago and it was such a fun, inspiring experience to PLAY yoga with a community of amazing teachers! I learned LOTS of new yoga games and ideas to keep my little yogis engaged and focused. I told my students that I had taken a yoga class just for kids yoga teachers and was excited to share all the fun games I learned with them!
It’s amazing how using a simple prop can transform an activity into something special! I passed my bendy flower, which I sprayed with some lavender oil, around the circle and asked each child to share what they looked forward to doing this summer. Then we all joined our friends in pretending to breathe in the scent of the flower. All the children were breathing together, as they were waiting to get to smell the flower themselves and we got a lot of Breathing in.
We began with a game I called Follow the Yogi Leader. I passed around my bendy flower again and let them know that this game required lots of focus and paying attention to the leader, as we followed every movement or pose they were doing. The kids had lots of laughs…some children made faces or danced and twirled and we followed what they did!

I remember having a sticker collection when I was a kid and begging my mom for a pack of stickers whenever we went to the stationery store. To this day, I still love using stickers to make gift wrapping and card giving special.

Teaching Kids about Being Thankful
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.
What’s better than expressing our gratitude for all that we have in our lives and sharing time with our family and loved ones?
This week, we explored the theme of Gratitude and Being Thankful in my yoga classes. We began with a discussion of what Thanksgiving means and each child got to share one thing that they are thankful for. I let the children know that we don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to be thankful, we can be Thankful every day!
P.K. Hallinan’s book I’m Thankful Each Day was the perfect book to engage my little yogis in the many things we can be thankful for. In the book, a boy describes all the blessings in his life, from the sun to the rain, to the trees and the love of his family and friends.

I told them that mandalas are shaped like a circle which is like the circle of life and how we are all connected in life.
Then I handed out the mandalas and some crayons and asked them to color quietly and think about what they are thankful for. I played some soothing flute music and the children spent some time very focused on coloring, some even drew their own Mandalas on the back of the their paper. For SAVASANA, they were all lying down and looking at their Mandalas, it was adorable!
It’s never to early to teach a child to BE THANKFUL and recognize all the gifts their lives!

Peaceful Piggy Meditation
One of my favorite yoga books is called PEACEFUL PIGGY MEDITATION!
Continuing with the theme of Meditation and Mindfulness, last week I brought in my PIGGY puppet and he read the book Peaceful Piggy Meditation by Kerry MacLean to the children! We started with a discussion about all the ways we had been learning about how to calm our “busy” minds. These are some of the responses I received when I asked them “So, what can we do to quiet our busy, busy minds?”:
“We can do our Balloon Breath”
“We can chant OMs”
We can be QUIET and listen”
“We can do yoga”
It was amazing to hear all the great responses they came up with and to see that they really made the connection between yoga and breathing and being quiet and peaceful inside.
I also brought in a meditation jar I had made with some glitter, water and a bit of blue food coloring. I had the children gather around in a circle on their bellies to watch, then I shook the jar vigorously and placed it on the floor. I explained that the glitter in the jar was like all the thoughts going around in our head. I asked them to watch was happening to the pieces of glitter in the jar. They told me they were falling and down down and how they stopped moving. I told them that as the pieces were settling down, the water was becoming clear and still, just like our minds when we do our meditation and quiet time.

The kids LOVED it and wanted me to shake it again and again and were so focused on watching the glitter swirling around then settling down. Then we did some yoga poses of animals and objects we found in the book. In the book, Piggy says: “it can be hard not to lose your temper when you’re angry” so I passed the PIGGY puppet around and asked each child to share what makes them angry and upset. Children are not often given a safe place to express what makes the upset or angry, so I wanted to give them a place to be heard in this way with acceptance and love.
After they shared their frustrations, I let them know it was ok to get angry and a good thing to do when we are feeling angry or upset is BREATHE! I taught them the LION’s BREATH, where they make an angry scrunched up face and then take a deep breath in and stick their tongues out and say “AHHHH” when they breath out! They all loved it and started laughing.
Peaceful Piggy Meditation helps teach kids that they can find their own PEACEFUL PLACE INSIDE through meditation.

3 Creative Ways to Do Yoga with Toys
TOYS! What child doesn’t love them?
Puppets, stuffed animals, dolls, toy trains, planes & trucks, the list goes on and on…
I’m sure your child got an assortment of toys for the holidays that they have been enjoying playing with.
But, did you know that toys are a perfect prop for teaching children yoga, focus, and relaxation?
As a yoga teacher, I have experimented with different kinds of props and have found that some of my most popular lessons have been using simple toys to spark a child’s imagination. I have my very own collection of stuffed animals and puppets which I love using in my classes.
Here are three ways to use what’s in your child’s toy chest or play room to teach your children positive, healthy yoga and movement activities while having FUN!
1) Toys are great for exploring Yoga Poses and Movement.
Grab your child’s favorite stuffed animals, dolls, trucks or puppets and go on a yoga adventure with them. A toy can be a wonderful prompt to MOVE and BE like the animal or object which the toy represents. Bark in Downward Dog Pose, Fly in Airplane Pose, Arch your Back in Cat Pose, Squat in Frog Pose…You don’t even need to be familiar with the yoga poses to enjoy this play time with your child. Just ask your child how a snake, a butterfly, or a car or truck moves and then stretch your body this way or that. Recently, a parent shared with me that once a week her 2 year who is in one of my preschool yoga enrichment classes would lay out a blanket and her stuffed animals and pretend to be the ‘yoga teacher’!
2) Toys are wonderful props for developing focus and concentration.
Whenever I bring out my bag of finger puppets, all my students get excited and are ready to explore our yoga poses together. They all watch and listen in anticipation as each child chooses a puppet from the bag and leads the class in a yoga pose! Doing yoga with a toy helps children focus while trying some of the more challenging poses. For example, ask your child to hold the puppet or toy out in front of them or place it on their head when doing a Tree Pose, which helps keep their attention on standing still and steady in the pose.
