Creating Space

Yoga creates space for what you want to come into your life.

This week I was finally able to make it to my Tuesday night yoga class with one of my mentors, Becky Middleton at Garden State Yoga. Whenever I take Becky’s class, something opens up for me.  At the beginning of class, she asked us to set an intention.

As I tuned into my breath, my intention was clear… I am devoting my practice to nurturing myself.

For the first time in a long time, perhaps ever…my intention was my own, for me and only me.

Becky led us through a rigorous Vinyasa class that balanced power with fluidity and grace.  She incorporated some beautiful dance-like movements, which were reminiscent of a bird in flight.  The sequence really opened my heart to what I have been exploring over the past year: keeping my attention on myself, loving myself and owning my power. Sometimes you do not recognize your own transformation until you take the time to really be present-in your body on the mat.

At some point during the class, I had this deeply moving realization that yoga allows me to CREATE SPACE.

The Light Inside-Teaching Kids About Spirituality

As a yoga teacher, part of my job is guiding my students to find their own light.

How do you teach a young child about spirituality?  Children may not understand the concept of a “soul”, but they do understand the idea of a LIGHT inside or the LOVE in their heart.

Over the past few months, my yoga lessons have revolved around finding PEACE inside or how we can express the LOVE in our hearts.  The children have been learning how they calm their bodies and their minds through yoga, breathing and meditation.  The other day, I asked my classes if they knew why we chant OMs before yoga,  and they responded “to find peace”.  It’s moments like these that make me love teaching!

Children are always learning…absorbing everything they see, hear and feel.

They relate what they learn to their inner experience.  Teaching a child to pay attention to their breath, tune into their feelings, and listen with their heart will help them develop a strong connection to themselves and the world around them. This builds their sense of trust in themselves and self confidence.  We may think they are too young to understand but they “get it”.

The greatest lesson you can teach young children is to LISTEN to their inner voice.

It’s not often that children get to just “be” and relax.  At the end of every class,they lie down in Savasana or

DO NOTHING DOLL…Nothing to think, Nothing to Do, Doing Nothing is Good for You.  

While my students are resting in Savasana, with their eyes closed, I tell them a “story”, a guided visualization where they are lying on a beach or going on a cloud ride in the sky. I ask them if they can try to be so still, so quiet that they can hear the sound of their own breathing.  I tell them to breathe in that calm feeling from  the top of their heads to their tip toes.  It may take weeks or even months before they can lie down without wiggling around or talking, but eventually they can and even enjoy it.  I let them know that no matter what, they can find that quiet place inside where they can always go when they are feeling sad or upset.

Partner Yoga Fun

This is a repost of a prior blog entry because my Partner Yoga poses have been quite popular.  

Here are some great ideas here for doing Partner Yoga with kids, tweens and teens. Enjoy!!

My niece has been doing yoga with her Auntie B (me) since she was a baby and is familiar with many of the kids’s versions of the poses.   Now that she is older, she has been more open to learning new poses and has even come to a yoga class with me.

The other night, my niece and I decided to do some yoga.

We set up our yoga mats in the living room and I had brought my Yoga Pretzel Deck which has lots of fun yoga activities for kids of all ages.  She looked through the cards and was immediately drawn to the Partner Poses, so she pulled out the cards and we gave them a try.

Partner Yoga is FUN!

We started with Partner Warrior and then moved on to some sitting poses like See Saw and Partner Boat.  We had quite a few laughs trying to lift our legs up at the same time because my niece has extraordinarily long legs for a 12 year old!   We tried every single one of the partner poses, some more than once.

Our favorites were Double Downward Dog and Lizard on a Rock, where one person rests in Child’s Pose (the “Rock”) and the other (the “Lizard” lays  on their back…what an amazing back stretch!  And from the smile on her face, it’s easy to see how much she liked this pose.

We had a hard time (and non-stop amusement) trying to get up off the floor from sitting back to back in Partner Chair, but my niece would not give up.   She was determined to figure out how we could lift each other up and we almost got up, but it didn’t happen.  We really enjoyed some flying poses where we lifted each other up in the air!

Partner yoga is such a wonderful bonding experience for children and adults alike…it involves supporting your partner, helping each other stretch and looking at each other while in the pose. It was so much fun doing yoga together and hearing the sound of my niece’s laughter!

The first time I walked into a yoga class, I had the experience of being out of my body while simultaneously feeling fully IN MY BODY. I had struggled with body issues and perfectionism my whole life and here I was letting go of the judgment and settling into myself. I continued to go to yoga class over the years because it was the one place where I could to just “be”, without judgment or criticism. Some days I could balance in Tree Pose and other days, I felt all wobbly and out of whack, just like in my life. But no matter what pose I was able to do or not do, I always left my yoga class feeling good about myself.

Until last summer when I completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training, I did not have a regular yoga practice. Despite the fact that I was teaching 10 children’s yoga classes per week and could see the sense of peace in my students, I had not made a commitment to make yoga a discipline in my life. Throughout my rigorous training, I learned that yoga was much more than a physical practice, it had the potential to open my heart.

Each time I get on my mat, I am opening my heart to myself. I become more aware of myself ~ physically, emotionally, energetically. I am fully aware of my body, its strengths and its limitations. I can see where I am holding tension in my body, where I can let go more, ease up more, connect more and love myself more.

My Valentine’s Day Wish for You

Valentine’s Day is a great idea in theory…a day when we celebrate those we LOVE.  But, all the hype and focus on romantic love can leave many people feeling lonely and inferior if they don’t have someone to spend Valentine’s Day with.  We are constantly bombarded by an unrealistic, idealized version of love in movies, TV, music and the media.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a hardcore romantic, the kind who writes mushy poetry when she is head over heels in love, the kind who cries listening to certain love songs or watching chick flicks when the girl finally gets the guy.  Romance is a beautiful expression of LOVE, but love is so much more than that.

This month, I have been teaching the children in my class about LOVE, the kind that comes from within and how important it is to love yourself.   We all need to be reminded of this every once in a while.  It is so easy to get caught up in looking for love from others, trying to please them, make them love us, while not being true to ourselves.

Part of accepting the nomination is sharing 7 things about myself.  Since I am taking on being pure, boundless love this month, I am choosing to share very authentically what most may NOT know about me…

1. I’ve been obsessed with words since I was a child…I mean really obsessed..I’ve kept a journal (which has been my therapist and my salvation) for the past 25 years of my life,  Scrabble is my favorite game, I am a book whore (not a big surprise)  and I love “playing” with words.

2. I am equally obsessed with hearts, I collect them and get them as gifts all the time. I have been dubbed the Love Grrl, the Love Goddess and my playa name (aka alter ego) at Burning Man is LUSCIOUS LUV.   

3. My first love is poetry…because it is the voice of my soul.  I write deep soulful, sensual, sometimes erotic poetry. (and I will be sharing more of it here thanks to Heather.)

4. I love nature and my favorite place to go alone (though I have taken some special people here) is atop this huge rock in a county park in Northern New Jersey.   It’s simply breathtaking up there, looking down on all the trees and trails. I go there to write and take Self Portraits to capture my ever evolving soul.

5. I fall in love way too easily, my heart’s been broken many times but it’s still wide open. I’ve learned to accept that I have a big heart and always see the good in people, I have grown wiser over the years and I now see this as a gift and a strength.

6. “I am a sea of emotions, spilling all over the place, out of control sometimes and I don’t want to be contained, just let me be”…(a line from one of my poems says it all.)

7. I believe that everyone should let their inner freak come out and play sometimes!

Yoga Surrender Playlist

February is the month of LOVE…so I will be sharing about all aspects of love.  Yoga AND love are about surrender.

After a long weekend of writing and concentration, I got on my mat, set my ipod to my favorite yoga playlist and just           LET GO…

Music is such an important element in yoga class.  During my yoga training, I began observing all the elements of a yoga class, including the kinds of music teachers used.  Some of the music I loved and some I did not really care for, so I decided to create my first yoga playlist to use the next time I taught my friend and first student Julie.  For some reason, I was being called to create a heart opening playlist and selected a variety of songs that have inspired my heart.

When I met with Julie for our weekly yoga session, she revealed that she was in a vulnerable place.  The yoga playlist and heart opening sequence that I had planned for the week were perfect for what she was going through.  I am learning to trust my intuition more and on some level I just “knew” that this music would be a great complement to my yoga sequence.

Creating yoga playlists  provides an opportunity to express my creativity and love of music by combining the perfect songs to  complement the theme of my class.  Julie loved my playlist so much that she asked me to share it with her and now I am sharing it with you.  May you surrender to your heart!
